Softness Has No Place is a book that delves into the psychological and behavioral effects of South Korea's 18-month mandatory military service, particularly its impact on traditional gender roles and the perpetuation of toxic masculinity and male dominance. The military serves as a critical lens for examining Korea's ongoing gender discourse, deeply rooted in Confucian cultural traditions. What does it mean to serve as a soldier in today's world, and how does this experience align with modern discussions about gender equality?

The first chapter examines Confucianism, a philosophy that has deeply influenced South Korea’s male-dominated gender roles, which continue to persist in modern society.

Chapter 2

The second chapter focuses on militarism, exploring its psychological effects on individuals after their service, its role in shaping societal views on gender, and the harsh realities faced by soldiers during their time in the military.

Chapter 3

The third chapter examines gender debates among South Korea’s younger generation, focusing on the rise of feminism that challenges traditional male-centered norms and the military's role in perpetuating patriarchy.

Chapter 4

The fourth chapter uncovers the tragic stories of women’s struggles and hardships during Korean War in 1950s.

Chapter 5

The book ends with stunning photographs of the DMZ, captured by Jongwoo Park, showcasing life along the border between South and North Korea. These images invite readers to reflect on the human stories unfolding at this dividing line, sparking a broader conversation about war and its impact on people's lives.
